What is the GS1 GPC Predictor?
The GS1 GPC Predictor helps you select the correct Global Product Classification (GPC) code for your product in a quick and accurate way. Thanks to artificial intelligence (AI), you receive a suggestion of the most suitable GPC classifications within seconds, based on a product image or product description.
Who is this tool for?
Every company connected to My Product Manager can use the GS1 GPC Predictor.
You find the tool on two places:
In the top bar of My Product Manager, as part of the new Smart Assistant.
When creating a new GTIN, during the selection of the GPC (only for users of the My Product Manager interface).
Via a product description: Fill in the three mandatory fields (product group, storage condition, product description).
Via an image: Upload an image of the product and optionally complete the other fields.
Preferably use a photo or file from which the tool can extract text.
After completing the information, click “Predict GPC”. Within seconds, you will see the top 3 best matching GPCs. You can then select the correct code to create a product sheet or copy the code for internal use. If you are unsure, use the info button to check the brick definition and see which products are within or outside the scope.
Important to know
The GS1 GPC Predictor is a support tool and may contain errors. It remains the user’s responsibility to select the correct GPC. If none of the options are suitable, carry out further research or contact GS1.
The quality of the prediction strongly depends on the input provided. Make sure to use a clear product description or a high-quality image.
Frequently asked questions
The tool supports several file types (TIFF, JPG, JPEG, PDF, PNG, TIF) up to 200 MB. The prediction is based on text extracted from the image. An image with a clear product description usually gives the best result.
The product group determines an initial selection of possible outcomes. There are three options: Food, Pet care or pet food, and Non-food. An incorrect choice can never lead to the correct result.
Food: All food products intended for human consumption.
In the GS1 GPC structure, this corresponds to segment 50000000 Food/Beverages.
Products such as cosmetics are explicitly NOT included.Pet care or pet food: All products intended for animal feeding or care.
In the GS1 GPC structure, this corresponds to segment 10000000 Pet Care/Pet Food. Non-food products for animal care, such as pet toys, are therefore also included.- Non-food: All other product groups and segments within the GS1 GPC structure.
For food products (including pet food), the GPC structure is often organised based on shelf life (shelf stable, perishable, frozen).
As this information is not always clear from the text or image, it is requested explicitly.
Shelf stable: The product is processed or packaged in such a way that no additional action is required to reach its maximum shelf life.
Perishable: The product must be stored refrigerated to ensure maximum shelf life.
Frozen: The product must be stored frozen to reach its maximum shelf life.
Not applicable: If the product category is not related to (pet) food, you can always select 'Not applicable'.
The prediction is generated by AI and may contain errors. That is why it is important to assess the result critically and only use it if the quality is sufficient.
Check whether you selected the correct product group and storage condition, and whether your description is clear enough. You can also try a different description or image. If the correct GPC does not yet exist, contact GS1.
At the moment, predictions can only be generated one product at a time. In the first half of 2026, an evaluation will take place to determine whether this functionality can be extended.
