GS1 uses a global system which classifies products clearly into categories: Global Product Classification (GPC).
GPC allows suppliers and customers to group together and classify products in a standardised and unambiguous manner. The GPC is flexible, easily scalable, and contains clear and unambiguous definitions.
Below you will find information on the basic principles of the GPC system, and information on how to assign GPC codes (bricks) to your products.

A GPC classification update was published in November 2022. You can download this publication here. You will find a brief overview here of the changes brought about by the November 2022 GPC publication. This update will go live in GDSN in May 2023. The Benelux DIY, Garden & Pet sector has requested changes and additions to the GPC system.
Submitted changes and additions to the GPC system can now be included in the next GPC publication and subsequently rolled out in the GDSN.
